Journey Into Helvellyn’s Woods of the Forgotten

The Cumbrian black metal scene’s latest export is a finely crafted storm of melodic riffs and in-your-face distorted vocals, cloaked in an atmosphere that foreshadows the end of summer’s light.

Top 5 Records of 2017 That Tied For #41

The biggest problem with our Top 40 Albums of 2017 is that it’s hard to fit 45 albums onto that list. Let’s expand our horizons with Black Anvil, Vallenfyre, Forgotten Tomb, Grave Pleasures and Suffering Hour.

METALHEAD HORROR AUTHOR JOHN BODEN PICKS 7 GREAT HEAVY MUSIC LITERATURE ADAPTATIONS

Rising metalhead horror author John Boden peppered his recent haunting, lyrical coming-of-age novella Jedi Summer With The Magnetic Kid with a slew of knowing nods to eighties heavy metal and hard rock. And he’s cited such distorted-yet-diverse bands as Masters of Reality and the Pixies as influences on his delightfully demented post-apocalyptic children’s book Dominoes. So it seemed apropos to hit the eloquent Harrisburg, Pennsylvania-based world-builder up for a few recommendations on where those looking to blend their loves of reading n’ riffage.

EORÐESLAJYR LET LOOSE THE WITCHES ON HOMAGE TO 1922 SILENT FILM “HÄXAN”

Good goddamn is HÄXAN some dark, disquieting, creepy, heavy, seriously avant garde, Hellraiser-esque torment-is-delight nastiness! Composed to serve as a soundtrack for Benjamin Christensen’s 1922 witchcraft n’ Satan heavy silent film of the same title, the latest from EORÐESLAJYR — that’s “earth slayer,” if you dare call their name — has got a Scorn by way of Swans by way of circa Too Dark Park Skinny Puppy vibe and its textures and left turns will fuck with your head.

To celebrate the album’s release — pick up your copy here — we asked the to delve into a few specific moments of inspiration drawn from the film that went on to possess the music…

Hall of Fame Countdown: Nile’s Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren-Ka

Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka is a near-perfect death metal album—absolutely pummeling and technically astonishing, yet layered with unique instrumentation and musical phrasing that give it an ancient, otherworldly atmosphere. Ranking such a slab of awesomeness from “worst to best” is about as ridiculous as Sully Erna’s face tattoo, but that’s never stopped us before!

Kris Force (Amber Asylum) interviewed

** Neo-classical outfit Amber Asylum have never been an easy sell. From debut Frozen in Amber to new album Sin Eater, the Californians, helmed by instrumentalist Kris Force, have composed and released music for darker minds and uneasy souls. There’s tradition at hand, but there’s also exploration, in tone, in repetition, in atmosphere, in tolerance, in chaos. The result is an undulating set of emotions that conflict and blend to their music. To wit, Amber Asylum is music of dreams and nightmares, spun wistfully and painfully by Force and company to the delight of the other. Music of this quality was never meant for the masses anyway. Read on as Decibel and Kris find our inners.
