For Those About to Squawk: Waldo’s Pecks of the Week

First of all, I’ll be around, guys. Just will be a little busy doing a whirlwind tour of press for the new Hatebeak record. But, hey, no selfless self-promotion, eh? Like I’ve never done THAT before. Swans are reissuing Filth, so you should check that out, and there’s a band called We Butter the Bread With Butter, which you probably shouldn’t check out (I didn’t).

KEN mode is releasing Success on Season of Mist, and as a fan of these guys, I gotta tell you that this is a feather burner. This is a much more cohesive and maybe mature-sounding band. The bass tone alone is killer on these tracks, and I really hope that this release garners them a little more attention, as they are a hard-working band and have never seemed to have really gotten much in the way of attention. For those who don’t know, KEN mode are kind of a post-whatever sort of tomfuckery that is groovy, heavy and sometimes chaotic. I mean just check this track out.

This certainly isn’t like any sort of blackend kvlt frosted corpsefuck metal, but just good, solid heavy hardcore rock delivered with heart and sack. So, like, check this out. 8 Fucking Pecks.

The masters of heavy — and I mean HEAVY — are back (sort of). Coffins are releasing Perpetual Penance on Horror Pain Gore Death. This is a 96-minute double CD of split 7-inches released over the years. This is pecking heavy, and Coffins deliver their brand of ultra brootal death rock/death metal. This is pummeling and definitely a must for anyone that’s a fan. The production here is a little spotty, as Coffins have always kind of been a lo-fi sort of deal. Well, not like “black metal bedroom” sort of lo-fi, but monolithic heavy chainsaw guitar and low-as-fuck bass production, but it all lends to Coffins’ overall aesthetic. I love this. This is in my cagehouse… or is it wheelcage? Whatever, this beaking rules. 7 Fucking Pecks.

From the opening creepy as squawk sample on “Serpenticide,” you can tell that Skinless have something here with Only the Ruthless Remain on Relapse. The recent resurgence in death metal has brought some bands back together, but Skinless, I’m stoked. This is death fucking metal, no doubt. With blasts, grooves, mosh riffs and the classic ’90s lineup in effect here, this is a death metal classic. I could do without the cover, which I think is a little goofy, but don’t let that detract from the “prime slab of truly death metal.” (Yeah I know that’s not grammatically correct, but I lifted it from their one-sheet.) Stockpile your beers, grab your minions, it’s time to get ruthless, quip the band. Indeed my friends, indeed. 8 Fucking Pecks.
