Marking their first new music in 18 years, Arizona’s chaotic hardcore veterans, The Hostage Situation, have made a thunderous return with their latest single, “The Last Leg,” and an equally intense music video to match.
The video throws viewers into a whirlwind of glitchy, rapid-fire scenes, blending elements of DIY punk aesthetics with modern post-hardcore intensity. It’s a visceral assault on the senses, where every quick cut and disorienting transition reflects the band’s relentless energy. The result is a mixed-media dystopian nightmare that perfectly complements the band’s chaotic soundscapes.
Vocalist Brandon Kellum shared some insights on the creative process behind the video, emphasizing the connection between the visuals and the single’s artwork. “With our members spread across the country, we had to get creative,” Kellum explains. “I filmed some performance footage before our last show and combined it with visuals inspired by the lyrics to evoke an early DIY punk/post-hardcore mixed-media vibe. On first watch, it may seem sporadic and almost schizophrenic, but there are a lot of intentional layers for the adventurous viewer to unpack.”
Formed in Phoenix, AZ, the band has a storied history in the mathcore scene. During its initial run from 2006 to 2010, it shared the stage with notable acts like The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza and Arsonists Get All The Girls. After a lengthy hiatus, the band re-emerged in 2017, hosting annual reunion shows that have become a staple in the local scene. These shows have raised nearly $10,000 for the Arizona nonprofit Rosie’s House.
Kevin Antreassian (The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Sawtooth Grin) mixed and mastered the track, which melds the raw, nostalgic sounds of early 2000s metalcore with modern, southern-tinged hardcore ferocity. The result is a chaotic anthem that adds a refreshing twist to the genre, proving that The Hostage Situation is back and ready to reclaim its spot in the hardcore pantheon.
For those brave enough to dive into the layers of chaos, “The Last Leg” offers a rewarding experience—both sonically and visually. Check out the video below!
