What’s up? It’s your old boy Waldo here to inform you about some new and upcoming releases — good, bad or otherwise. Remember, I’m not an elitist, you just have terrible taste.
Canada’s Thantifaxath is releasing Hive Mind Narcosis on Dark Descent. This is not your average black metal record. There are aspects of black, doom, thrash, death or psychedelia. First impressions (aside from the cavernous drums) are the “trucker microphone vocals.” Equally disgusting and somewhat intelligible, the voice here is simply sick. The guitars are very prevalent in the mix giving this an aggressive sound. I know, I know, what about the music? The press release accurately describes this as such. “From its very first note, there is a feeling of transcendence beyond genre… beyond its scene and peers. Previously dubbed avant-garde black metal, Thantifaxath surpasses such mundane press tags, instead conjuring forth an expansive, discordant and mind-altering brew.” This is a solid metal record, and the press release is right, this is not a typical black metal record. 9 Fucking Pecks. Also, Decibel has exclusive gold copies of this on vinyl. This is limited—only 13 left—so get them quick.
Graveworm is releasing Killing Innocence. My first impressions here are not great. Even though this is a super tough sounding name, the band itself is pretty wimpy. Keyboard intros, melodic guitars, growled vocals… sound like something you’ve heard before? The lush, thick production here gives it a little depth, but don’t let that fool you. Even though some of the songs are written well, the whole thing comes across as middling. There is nothing that really sticks out of this record that would separate it from a ton of other better European melodeath bands. Apparently, this is supposed to be their comeback record, but it just falls flat to me. Reviews of this are pretty positive, but I 100% disagree… This is boring, so boring it sucks, or so uninspired that it sucks. Either way the end result is… it sucks. Not into it. 2 Fucking Pecks.
