No one will be describing San Diego death doom duo Mordom’s latest, Cry of the Dying World, as the the “feel-good hit of the winter,” but that’s the point, isn’t it? Max Hoffman (vocals, bass, guitars and keyboards) and Nathan Gonzalez (drums and vocals) are offering up four extended tracks of misery on their second full length and first for Transylvanian Tapes.
This is a duo that blew Decibel away with their debut effort, Eternal Solitude, a year ago, so we’re stoked for their return with more of the same death metal-informed funeral brutatlity. If you’re looking to get into a dark mood, this’ll take you to where you want to go. But don’t take our word for it; here’s what the band had to say.
“Cry of the Dying World is about corruption and the impact it has had on both humanity and the world. The first half of the album centers around the human directly, addressing lives ruined due to corruption in medicine and the pharmaceutical world (“Narcosis”) and a society torn apart by corruption in the media (“Betrayed”). The second half is about the consequences in terms of climate change and destruction, first in the form of in wildfires and bombings (“The Fire”) and the impending Holocene extinction event (“The Mausoleum”). We sought to create an album that captured the existential doom of living in this type of world—a dying world crying for mercy.”
