Vitriol proved that they are at the top of death metal’s new class in 2017 with the brief-but-effective EP Pain Will Define Their Death and cemented it last year with their Century Media debut, To Bathe from the Throat of Cowardice. Today, Decibel has the band’s new video for “Hive Lungs” from that album—if you haven’t opened your ears to the Portland quartet, now is an excellent time to rectify that mistake.
It’s pure death metal driven by ferocity and precision: each riff is sharp and precise while drummer Scott Walker works overtime to put on a masterclass performance; once the tag-team vocal assault from bassist Adam Roethlisberger and guitarist Kyle Rasmussen comes in, Vitriol leave no doubt that they are one of the best the genre has to offer, with shades of Nile, Hate Eternal and Anaal Nathrakh frequently peaking through.
The video for “Hive Lungs” was taken on the band’s tour with Cattle Decapitation, which took place at the end of 2019.
“‘Hive Lungs’ is a song that really came to life when we began to perform it live,” Rasmussen offers about the new video. “James (the director) did a wonderful job capturing the energy we had been experiencing during that song night after night on stage. It is important to us that we have an authentic connection with our music while we play, and we wanted this video to demonstrate that.
“To Bathe From the Throat of Cowardice, for all its intensity, has many different intentions for the listener. We are excited to explore those colors as we continue to support of the album.”
