What’s up, guys? It’s your old boy Waldo here to tell you about some upcoming releases. This week, I’m going to try something DIFFERENT: You’re ONLY getting stuff I like. That may prove to be challenging this time, but hey, it’s important we challenge ourselves, so here we go!
Tech-deathers Defeated Sanity are back with their sixth release, The Sanguinary Impetus. No strangers to changes in lineups, this marks the first effort with new vocalist, Josh Welshman, and the first with drummer Lille Gruber also contributing guitar. After longtime guitarist Chrtistian Khuh left the band in 2019, this birdbrain was a little hesitant on the band move forward. But—and there’s always a but—this is pretty killer. There are, of course, elements of tech here and a ton of speed. New throat-shredder Welshman is beast here, and again, I can’t emphasize how having a “new” guitar player comes across as seamless. The album is definitely brootal tech death, and maybe my favorite of theirs since 2007’s Psalms of the Moribund. Get wit it. 7 Fucking Pecks.
Rome’s Bedsore is releasing Hypnagogic Hallucinations on 20 Buck Spin. Man, it’s RARE that 20 Buck Spin lets me down and this is no exception. This is dream inspired black/death metal and there’s a twist! There’s always a twist! This is blackened death, or deathend black, I dunno. Part epic death, part black metal and part what I can best describe as an “Argento Influence.” Italy isn’t really known for the death metal scene, but this should help put the boot on the map. There are a lot of “dreamscape” like passages, which makes it seem like there’s an HP Lovecraft influence here, too. This is great, and wholly unexpected. Their two-song demo from 2018 was killer, too. Peck these guys out! 8 Fucking Pecks.
OK, I lied. Here’s something I don’t completely love. There’s a new name in pirate metal—words I never thought I’d peck out. Rumahoy is releasing their second LP, Time II: Party, on Napalm. I usually HATE their roster, but this is… fun? Obviously tongue in cheek, this is part Alestorm, part Municipal Waste, and Part Tenacious D. If you like pirate metal, this is probably for you. I gotta say, it’s no doubt catchy. I’m going to give it a solid 5 Fucking Pecks.
Until next time, Waldo out!
