Denner’s Inferno leader Michael Denner could’ve retired from metal with pride after appearing on influential Mercyful Fate and King Diamond albums. However, the guitarist has kept busy. His most recent name-checking project was born from the ashes of Denner’s Trickbag, and the name change is appropriate. The spooky new music video for “Sometimes” pairs much better with the hellish handle than the previous magician-referencing moniker.
The song incorporates a heavy (yet palatable) prog influence that places its sound in proto-metal territory, despite coming from hands of a key heavy metal player in 2019. Lyrically, the song focuses on what-ifs and comes to the conclusion that it’s better to stay present than ponder. The topic is apt given Denner’s exclusion from the Mercyful Fate reunion, which he’s besting by leaving it in his rear-view. His future will include the November 15 release of his Inferno’s debut LP, In Amber, via Mighty Music. The band will announce tour dates soon.
It’s worth noting that Denner’s drummer, Bjarne T. Holm, and “Sometimes” co-writer Hank Shermann are playing in the re-formed Mercyful Fate.
