We probably don’t need to tell you this, but Obscene Majesty, the new album from Dallas’ Devourment, is a masterclass in slam and brutal death metal. At 10 tracks and just over 45 minutes of caveman death metal, Obscene Majesty is one bludgeoning moment after another, a calculated exercise in brutality; Devourment make it crystal clear why they have been the kings of slam for two decades.
Each time you think that Obscene Majesty can’t get heavier, Devourment double down and deliver something that tops the song before. The album is unrelenting; there are no filler tracks or minute-long horror samples that give the listener a chance to catch their breath. Devourment have easily set the bar for brutal death metal in 2019 with songs like “Narcissistic Paraphilia,” “Arterial Spray Patterns” and “Modum Sui Morte.”
Obscene Majesty is out July 16 on Relapse, but you can listen right now.
