When you write about music you inevitably come across certain bands that you develop affection for, but so few people catch on that it becomes frustrating. Such is the music business; the whole damned thing is so ephemeral that an enormously talented band’s window of opportunity can slam shut before they even had a chance. We at Decibel have always loved Goes Cube—hell, I raved about their debut LP, Another Day Has Passed, back in 2009—and while the trio hasn’t exactly cracked the consciousness of American rock fans, those who have gotten to know their music sure as hell appreciate what they’ve done.
Unless you’re Kerry King, all good things come to an end sooner or later, and this year Goes Cube announced that their third album, Shadows Swallowed the Flood, would be their last one. If there’s any consolation, it’s that their last album goes out on a very high note. Just like that fantastic debut album seven years ago, the new record focuses on that unique hybrid of sounds that made the band so engaging in the first place. You hear traces of Torche’s melodic heavy rock, the more experimental touches of Slint, and, for good measure, just enough Fugazi-inspired post-hardcore to give the music the right amount of edginess. It’s alternately throttling and ebullient, but the best moments are when it’s both, the music skyrocketing toward the horizon while at the same time leaving a trail of scorched earth in its wake.
