It’s incredible to think that a band that burst on to the scene with a novel collection of Metallica covers on cello has not only managed to out together a career lasting two decades, but has built itself into an incredibly popular act.
Although they’ve been an active touring band, it’s been five years since Apocalyptica has put out new music, but that’s about to change with the April 21 release of eighth album Shadowmaker (Better Noise). Produced by Nick Raskulinecz, it’s the most daring album of the Finnish band’s career. Not only has the foursome of cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, and Perttu Kivilaasko, and drummer Mikko Sirén ditched the guest vocalist idea in favor of full-time singer Franky Perez, but they’ve embraced conventional mainstream metal and hard rock songwriting, which works remarkably well on the new record. If Apocalyptica was ever ready for crossover success, it’s now.
A fine example of Shadowmaker’s strong melodic sensibility is its first single “Cold Blood”, and we’re pleased to premiere the new video for the track here at Decibel. Watch it below, and be sure to pre-order the album at iTunes.
