so might as well get this started...

For me the debate is usually more so in the order of things, rather than whats on it. Some things that I was very surprised about their inclusion/order:

-Cobalt at #5 was a shocker. Good for them. This was a really good album that I had kind of forgotten about due to it coming out so early

-Awesome to see The Atlas Moth (19) on the list, let alone in the top 20

-Slayer (7) is way too high

-Tombs (8) is way too high (though I am well aware I am in the minority on this)

-I thought that YOB (16), Goatwhore (27), Katatonia (29), Brutal Truth (32) and Krallice (33) would all be much higher.

-Surprised to see Immortal (11) so high. I personally love it but a lot of the reviews were mixed.

Most surprising ommisssions:

No Pelican, Shrinebuilder (WTF?!?!?!), Buried Inside, WITTR or Struck By Lightning.

Sorry about the length/shitty format of this. I'm kind of just making notes. Alright, bring it on...

Winterhours is on there!?! Holy shit. Well done Decibel. Love that record. So far the list seems to be full of either surprises or "told ya so" kind of entries, which are better than "what the fuck were they thinking" kind of entries, which is something I often associate with EOY lists by Metal Hammer and Terrorizer, which is unfortunately getting progressively worse... though they still have some great writers.

I'm a little sad to not see Pelican on the list. My issue should be in tomorrow (I don't really care about the spoiler) so hopefully I'll see Isis in at least the top 20...

you'll see Isis in the top 10. I liked that record a lot, def my favorite of theirs since oceanic. But IMO there was not a better postmetalwhateveryoucallit album this year than Buried Inside and that didn't even crack the list.

Epic. I agree and definitely expected Buried Inside to be in there...but then again, it's merely a list.

Also agreed. But what is a list for if not to inspire (or perhaps instigate) opinions and debate?

Luke_the_C: Very good point. Once I get the issue I'll most likely lose my level head and find something to bitch about in the list.

DruM: I'm actually a Terrorizer reader that has given up on the zine recently. They said Suicide Silence was the future of death metal. I laughed til I cried then had to throw out the issue. Sad day.

Once you crack it open, leave it on the counter for a few days...you'll find out.

I recently didn't renew a Terrorizer subscription mostly because I noticed I wasn't reading much of it anymore. I'll still pick up the end of the year issue to check out their list. I almost always agree with their Top 40 more than any other publication.

The biggest WTF omissions from this year's Decibel Top 40 are Shrinebuilder, Sunn0))), ABSU, Ancestors, Iron Age, Slough Feg, Drudkh & Tribulation. Especially with Shrinebuilder! That album should easily of gotten the 6th or 4th place.

I'm totally happy with Slayer getting the 7th spot. Fucking great album by them.

Shrinebuilder is easily the biggest omission on this list. That is def top 10 IMO. It took me going through the list 4 or 5 times to realize that it wasn't there.

Ancestors and Iron Age are two others that I didn't think of. More so Ancestors. I figured that to make the list.

The new Slayer is definitely good and I have no qualms about it being on the list, I just don't think its top 10 good. The production is big detractor for me.

I also expected a top 10 appearance by Katatonia. That one's a surprise for me. Also, a top 5 appearance by Tombs was expected for me.

Top 3 I imagine is Converge/Baroness/Coalesce?

Cobalt at 5 was shocking but totally deserved that album is SO good.

Mastodon, Goatwhore, Burnt By the Sun, Funeral Mist should all be higher up.

Seriously Funeral Mist before Altar of Plagues? Huh?

Also, I really don't get all the cock love for Baroness. "The Blue Record" is good, but sometimes that band just looses me.

K, so I want to do a bit of a recap of the top 10. Nobody's coming out and saying it clearly so, I figure I'll try my best. 1-3 are covered by Converge, Coalesce and Baroness. 4 is Napalm Death, 5 is Cobalt, 7 is Slayer, 8 is Tombs. ISIS is somewhere in there, so that leaves two albums. My guess would be Nile and, this stretching it, Suffocation?
