It's been nearly 14 years since Eyehategod graced us with a new long-player, but thankfully that drought will come to an end in a matter of weeks when the band's self-titled fifth LP drops on May 27th. Not only are the album's 11 songs well worth the wait, but frontman Mike IX Williams was kind enough to tell us about music he listens to on his "stupid iPod in the filthy tour van." We'll let one of NOLA's finest take it from here: "So Eyehategod's musical taste is all over the place, as of course as it should be. Any touring band will most likely tell you that you just end up listening to different things, mainly polar opposites of the style your group plays or you will literally die of boredom. We collectively and individually crank up lots of blues, country, new wave, early hardcore and punk, psych, dub, goth, different genres of metal and hard rock, experimental and tons and tons more. Besides my go-to list below, another small fraction of my iTunes library would range from Brian Eno, H-100's, Wu-Tang, School Jerks, Roxy Music, Gary Numan, Abscess, The Spits, Towns Van Zandt, Whitehouse, Augustus Pablo, Death Grips and on and on. Fuck man, I could go on forever..." Given that the quintet will be on the road through most of June (see dates below), we're sure that the five artists below (plus the six we'll pass along next week) will be getting their fair share of airtime in the EHG mobile very soon.
Pre-order a copy of
Butthole Surfers--Psychic... Powerless... Another Man's Sac (1984), Cream Corn From The Socket Of Davis EP (1985) and Rembrandt Pussyhorse (1986) I can never get enough of this band, riding around making waste of the universe and waiting to get to Warsaw and vomit somewhere. Sickly LSD party times.
Roky Erickson & The Aliens--The Evil One (Plus One) (2002) Brilliant, absurd, creative, nonsensical and truly original, this album never gets tired or old and Roky's backing band is absolutely right on point. His vocal delivery and of course his horror obsessed lyrics take outsider music to a new level of definition. I'm glad he's finally getting some recognition, but he deserves way more in my eyes...genius.
BL'AST!--The Power Of Expression (1986) and It's In My Blood (1987) Santa Cruz surf rats, making hardcore the way it should be still done today...and they are still doing it today! No frills, just classic and pissed off '80s damage.
The Gun Club--Fire Of Love (1981) Jeffrey Lee Pierce sang songs about swamped out devil's music as if he was born and raised in Louisiana not Los Angeles. This record preaches the blues and hits the mark with heavy duty slide guitar straight outta the Hollywood Boulevard gutters.
Riot--Fire Down Under (1981) Underrated and amazing band. Demands repeated listens while drinking 40-ounce bottles of something cheap.
