This month, we wrangled the prolific East Coast trio Horrendous from their jobs holding down every recent Decibel event to discuss their contribution to the series. Drummer Jamie Knox tosses in his two cents about the band’s choice to keep it original with a song the band hadn’t previously finished. Knock some teeth out with “Sentenced” below.
When were you approached to contribute to the Flexi Series?
Albert popped the question to us one day several months ago and we of course could not turn him down.
What song did you choose for the Flexi?
Instead of doing a cover, we decided to finish up a song we had started, but never finished during the Anareta sessions. We took those parts and added newly crafted material, resulting in “Sentenced” — what we think is a heavy headbanger.
When and where did you record the song?
As with all of our material, the song was recorded by Damian at his Subterranean Watchtower Studios in Virginia. A portion of the writing had been done previously, but in one weekend we rounded out the songwriting and recorded everything. Our albums are normally recorded in parts (complete drums for all songs first, then rhythm guitars, etc.) over an extended period of time, but this song was completely crafted and recorded in one weekend. Mixing and mastering took a few more days after that, of course.
Your Flexi is red with gold text. What do you think about that color choice?
You can’t beat the red/gold combo.
What is your favorite Flexi so far?
The cover of “My War” by Leviathan was particularly cool. And of course Tribulation did some nice work with those Misfits covers.
