There was once a time when I could pop Mogwai’s Young Team on the stereo, crank the volume, lay on my bedroom floor, stare at the glow-in-the-dark stars on my ceiling and convince myself that I understood something about the grandeur of the universe that non-Mogwai listeners didn’t get. Them days are gone. Whereas before I’d bask in the obliqueness of “post-rock”’s tidal narrative (atmosphere ? repetition ? buildup ? climactic riff ? recede), now I associate the oft-ponderous style with immaturity. For the metal fan who prizes craft and directness, post-rock offers little. —Etan Rosenbloom
