Decrepit Birth Studio Report, Part I

By Matt Sotelo (Decrepit Birth)

We officially began recording for Polarity on Thursday, January 7th. We did all the drum tracking at Sharkbite Studios, with the help of engineer, Zack Ohren. We are happy to say that the drum tracking went very smoothly. The session began by setting KC's [Howard] drums up, we threw on new heads and tuned the drums up. The natural tone of his kit was sounding amazing in the middle of Sharkbite's live room. The acoustics were superb in the specially tuned room. KC was able to get his job done for the album in two days. Overall, it went very smooth... even though there were some "on the fly" improvisations that went down. Overall, KC did an amazing job and we are really happy with the outcome of his work.

Since we had the studio booked for a third day, we decided to bring in our good friend Lee Smith who plays drums for Estradasphere to lay down drum tracks for a surprise cover song that will appear on the album! That came out sounding amazing. Lee is really one talented as hell drummer. So, since he was already there, I really wanted him to do drums on a slow, heavy instrumental interlude. And, of course, he nailed the drums for that with ease! It was a real treat to have Lee in the studio with us and I'm glad that he will be a part of the new album.

So at the end of the three days we spent earlier this month at Sharkbite, I feel very satisfied with what we got. Zack has done a great job, and we're very happy to be working with him again. In our usual style we had an ‘herbal’ celebration at the end, and said goodbye to Sharkbite! It was a blast to record there.

So in the past weeks since then, I've been waiting to receive drum tracks from Zack. Some of the songs have needed small but precise edits, so Zack has been combing through the tracks to make sure everything is in order before I start recording guitars in my home studio. Yesterday, I got the first drum tracks back for three songs, so this weekend I will be cleaning and re-stringing my guitars, and setting up my gear and computer for the actual guitar tracking. If all goes to plan, I can begin recording guitars this Sunday. Look forward to another In-Studio blog post with more pictures and info about the guitar tracking for our upcoming album Polarity.

** Decrepit Birth's Polarity is slated for a 2010 release on Nuclear Blast Records.
