The Mirroring Shadow
As if we didn’t need to feel more self-important already | Lifeforce
Any music critic who thinks he or she has any influence on their subject is fooling themselves; but still, when you publish a review that clearly states what’s wrong with an album and then the band in question puts out a follow-up that does exactly what you suggested, as assholish as it seems, it’s impossible to shake that smug “I told you so” feeling. A year ago, Miseration’s Your Demons, Their Angels sounded as if vocalist Christian Älvestam couldn’t quite shake his former band Scar Symmetry, the blend of brutal and melodic sounding surprisingly awkward, and it was clear the band would be far better off if he’d just pick one vocal style and stick with it. Well, that’s just what he does on The Mirroring Shadow, and what a difference it makes. —Adrien Begrand
