It’s not easy for an artist to escape the shadow of his former band, especially when said band played a significant role in helping transform an entire genre. Ever since returning to extreme metal in 2006, Ihsahn has slowly been carving himself a new identity separate from the looming specter of Emperor, yet at the same time doing so in a way that doesn’t alienate the many fans of the black metal legends. It’s been a matter of finding his comfort level within the sound again, and while 2008’s angL was a big step in that direction, you get the feeling that with After, he’s finally there. —Adrien Begrand
