Not hating, just saying: Sometimes when it comes to grim-clown music—especially the sub-basement lo-fi homegrown kind—a certain lack of adroitness in the playing actually adds a surplus to the grimness. How else do you explain the universal appeal of Hellhammer, many of BM’s earliest second-wave releases (cough cough, Burzum) and nearly the entire catalog of Xasthur? (Hello, drum fills!) Avsky’s Malignant perfectly rode the line, where the clunky boosted the chthonic. On third full-length Scorn, some of the delivery is still a smidge heavy-handed (once again, hello, drum fills!), but the dexterity has kicked up lockstep with the amply-delivered BPMs. —Shawn Bosler
