Cannabis Corpse
The Weeding
Joint venture | Tankcrimes
The most weed smoke I ever encountered at a show was when I saw Cypress Hill. It was like a Sunn O))) show, except that instead of fog, the room was filled with weed smoke. I could hardly see the stage. That was to be expected. More surprising was the show with the second most weed smoke ever: Rush. Fools had fishbowled the bathroom so hard that the smoke was practically blinding. It was all these middle managers who had money and could afford good stuff.
I recently saw Cannabis Corpse play, and to my knowledge, no middle managers were there. That’s unfortunate, as they might dig Cannabis Corpse. How could anyone not love a weed-themed Cannibal Corpse parody band? Cypress Hill had “Insane in the Brain”; Cannabis Corpse have “Shit of Pot Seeds.” The new mantra for the death metal generation: “Shit! Shit of pot seeds! Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit of pot seeds!” I don’t even smoke weed, and I find that awesome.
But The Weeding is not a joke—not completely, anyway. The music is solid, a midpoint between Cannibal Corpse’s early rawness and later technicality. Sometimes the vocals approximate the amazing screams of George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher. “Vaporized” and “Sickening Photosynthesis” have magnificent melodies that signal a major step forward for this band. In terms of seriousness, perhaps The Weeding is to Cannabis Corpse what Temples of Boom was to Cypress Hill. Let’s just hope they don’t go on to play rap-metal. —Cosmo Lee
