Colosseum
Funeral doom crew is driven like the snow
It’s 3:30 a.m. Christmas Eve. December in Michigan hasn’t been too bad in recent memory, but I’m in the thick of it this year. The cold winds of nowhere are strong tonight. Snow completely covers Interstate 69. As “Demons Swarm by My Side” slips into a gorgeous sustaining lead around the five-minute mark, I realize I’m alone. Not one car or truck is braving the same blizzard I foolishly am. Looking out the driver’s side window, it’s dark, but the snow-covered farmland creates an eerie glow. A minute later, Juhani Palomäki’s unearthly bellow breaks the guitar line and Colosseum’s exquisite doom lurches forward, shattering the tranquil interlude. If this were a movie, I’d be history—a snack for some unnameable Lovecraftian beast that emerges in the early morning hours on the coldest of days.
