Track Premiere: Adjure – ‘What Do the Dead Know?’

You might know artist Chuck BB from his work with Decibel or his graphic novel Nosk of the Void. If not, you can know him for Adjure, his new one-man black metal project inspired by the likes of Gehenna and Sigh. Adjure’s debut album, Live Like You Know You’re Going to Die, is slated for a May 31 release and Decibel is happy to share its first teaser, final track “What Do the Dead Know?”

The subject matter focusing on death and grief is matched by the raw atmosphere of the song, the production creating a result that sounds dramatic and mournful. Lyrically, it’s a poignant reminder to dedicate your time to life and the living rather than wallowing in grief and loss.

“’What Do The Dead Know?’ is the last song on the album. And it has to be, within the album it is sort of the final revelation of the journey, so to say. The last lines from this song and ultimately the album are ‘live like you know you’re going to die’ and of course that is the name of the album.

“I think that line is a sort of mantra for the entire Adjure project. It’s a strangely positive message, whilst still firmly aware of the specter of death and the futility of life. Within the song I am urging the listener, and probably myself, to be fully aware that this life is yours to make of what you will. And the dead know this best.

“The lyric video I created features illustrations that are also part of the album. Each song will have its own piece of art, and is part of a multi-page lyric and art booklet that accompanies the album. I hadn’t done something like this before, tying my illustrations with my music. But I had a clear-ish picture of what I wanted it to look and feel like. Am I making the most of my time? I don’t know, but I’m trying.”
